I met accordionist Vojta Drnek four years ago at the Jazz Goes To Town festival in the Czech city of Hradec Králové. We stayed in touch in the meantime, and I continued to follow his work, becoming particularly interested when he released his first album under his own name, Lost Wisdom, on the independent label Ma Records.
This is a solo accordion album with an avant-garde edge, one that engages with the jazz tradition while simultaneously pushing towards experimentation, so it naturally caught my attention and found a place in my listening rotation.
When we met again at this year’s edition of JGTT, we easily agreed to do the interview you’re about to hear, and in a relaxed atmosphere, we talked about Vojta’s beginnings, his thoughts on his own music, his career in Berlin, and a few other things.
